Salmonella typhi is what the bacteria that causes typhoid fever is called. (This is NOT to be confused with the bacteria that causes samonellosis.) It is gram negative* and does not require oxygen. It is also rod shaped (shaped like a slightly elongated pill capsule) and is part of the family enterobacteriaceae.
Although it can be spread other ways, some insect vectors for this disease include:
Flesh flies
House flies
Blow Flies
*Gram negative bacteria have a thinner peptidoglycan layer than gram positive bacteria. They are also more resistant to antibodies. They are called this because, in a test where purple dye is placed on the bacteria, gram negatives appear more reddish than purple.
